A Day in the Life of a BIP Student: Meet Drusilla Nyamutoro

Department: Welding and Metal Fabrication

Drusilla Nyamutoro is a welding and metal fabrication student at Busoga International Polytechnic (BIP). She spends her days learning how to shape and join metal — a skill that’s in demand and opens doors to many types of work.

She didn’t expect to enjoy working with steel, but now she’s fully committed. Her training is helping her build confidence, discipline, and a plan for the future.

Morning Routine: A Focused Start

Drusilla is up by 6:00 AM. She gets ready, eats breakfast with friends, and clears her head before the day starts. Her mornings are simple and structured, which helps her stay focused.

By 8:00 AM, she’s preparing for her first session — usually a lecture or class.

Theory Classes: Understanding the Basics

At 9:00 AM, she’s in class. The subjects vary — some days it’s the science behind heat and metals, other days it's calculations and measurements.

She pays attention because the theory helps her make better decisions in the workshop later. The trainers keep things practical, and the learning is tied directly to what she’ll do with her hands in the afternoon.

Lunch Break: Recharge and Connect

Around 1:00 PM, she takes a break. Lunch at BIP is a time to relax, catch up with classmates, and reset before the hands-on part of the day begins.

Afternoon Practical: Workshop Time

By 2:00 PM, Drusilla is suited up in her protective gear, ready to work in the welding shop.

She spends this time working on projects — cutting, welding, shaping, and assembling metal parts. Some days she works alone; other days, she’s paired with classmates to build larger pieces.

Recently, she worked on a custom metal frame. A few weeks ago, she helped build a gate. The projects vary, but the goal stays the same: to get better, to build stronger, and to work more efficiently.

Evening: Cooldown and Reflection

At 5:00 PM, she finishes cleaning up and heads back to the dorm. Some evenings, she joins stretching sessions or just relaxes with friends and music.

Dinner is served by 7:30 PM. It’s a quiet time, with everyone winding down. Some students study, others plan the next day.

Drusilla often sketches ideas for future projects before bed.

Looking Ahead

Her goal is simple: to one day open her own fabrication workshop. She wants to earn a living doing something she enjoys and to provide opportunities for others.

Each day at BIP gets her one step closer.
